Slider Question

1:  About Slider Question

The slider element utilizes a number form and must contain a value range for the slider points, and may contain multiple sliders (i.e., rows). This element does not utilize flash.

  • The slider question is mobile compatible.
    • Usability will degrade as multiple sliders are added

2:  Adding a Slider Element

Note: You can set the "Show" filter to display only elements that are compatible or optimized for the devices allowed for your project. Click here to learn how to how verify your project settings.

To insert a slider element, add a new survey element, select the "Dynamic" tab and choose "Slider". Then click "Insert".

 

Enter the question text into the area provided. Question instructions can be customized by overwriting the default instruction text. Add the answer options by clicking the "Add Sliders".

If you only want to show one slider with the question text, do not add any answer options.

Enter the text for the sliders. Each entry will be a new row and have its own slider. Do not number the answer options unless you want numbering to appear for the respondent. The system will automatically provide labels/numbers for the answer options, which you can edit later in "Options".

All answers will appear in the question box with labels (r1, r2, r3), indicating row/slider elements. You may edit the answer options by selecting the "Slider Actions" dropdown menu. Click "Answer Piping" to show rows based on the answers of a previous question; to learn more, click here.

Next, we need to define the range for the slider bar. In the general options for the element, enter the desired range for the slider scale in the "Value Range" field. In our example we entered a range of 1-5, meaning the lowest value is 1 and the highest is 5.

3:  Style Settings

To configure the display settings for the slider element, click the "Style: Slider" link.

The "Question Display Options" window will appear. You may configure the settings for the slider element using the options on the left. Additional information about each feature will appear when you mouse-over the text. Click "Preview" to preview the settings. Once the changes are made, click "Save".

Display Option Description
Initial Slider Position

Allows you to specify where to start the slider handle.

  • Off Scale  : Start with the slider handle to the left of the slider scale
  • Left End  : Start with the slider handle at the minimum value of the slider scale
  • Middle  : Start with the slider handle at the middle value of the slider scale
  • Right End  : Start with the slider handle at the maximum value of the slider scale
Scale Interval

Enter a whole number to set the interval of each slider point on the slider scale.

Example:
If you enter 5 in the scale interval and the value range is set to 0-100, the slider will jump to points 0, 5, 10, 15, and so on.

Scale Legend Position

Allows you to specify where the slider legend displays.

  • Above Slider  : Displays the legends above the slider scale
  • Below Slider  : Displays the legends below the slider scale
Left Legend

Allows you to enter text to display above the left-most slider point.

Example:  
Completely Dissatisfied

Middle Legend

Allows you to enter text to display above the middle slider point.

Example:  
Neither Satisfied nor Dissatisfied

Right Legend

Allows you to enter text to display above the right-most slider point.

Example:  
Completely Satisfied

Slider Value

Allows you to specify where the slider value is displayed.

  • Above Slider  : Will show the value above the slider scale
  • Below Slider  : Will show the value below the slider scale
  • On Handle  : Will show the value on the slider handle
  • Do Not Show Value  : Will hide the value completely
Pre-Text

Allows you to enter a character to display before (i.e., to the left of) the slider value indicator.

Example:

Post-Text

Allows you to enter a character to display after (i.e., to the right of) the slider value.

Example:  
___%

Editable Input

If the "Slider Value" is set to Above Slider or Below slider, this option allows you to make the value indicator editable, meaning respondents can click on the value and enter a specific number.

  • When checked, the value box is editable to respondents.
  • When unchecked, the value box is read-only. Only moving the slider will update the value.
Color-Fill Track
  • When checked, the track will be highlighted according to the action of the slider, from the minimum value to the slider handle.
  • When unchecked the track will not be highlighted.
Slider Container Width

Allows you to modify the width of the slider scale bar by specifying the percentage of the window size it will occupy. The optimal setting for most sliders is 75%.

Example:
100% will stretch the slider to the full width of the survey page.

Opt Out Text

Allows you to create an "opt-out" option for the slider. Enter the desired text in this field and a checkbox will be created automatically for each slider.

Note: Additional steps are required to setup the opt-out option. Click here for instructions.

Example:  
Enter Not Applicable in this field and a "Not Applicable" checkbox will appear below the slider scale, allowing the respondent an answer option if the slider points don't apply to their experience.

3.1:  Adding an Opt-Out Answer Option

For data collection requirements, the "Opt-Out" checkbox needs to have a data value connected to it (the checkbox is automatically created when you add "Opt Out Text" in the style settings.

To do this, locate the "More options" menu in the general options for the question. Select "ignoreValues" and a new field will appear in the options section. Enter a value in the field. This value must be outside of the specified value range. For example, our value range is 1-5, and the unique value we've chosen is 99.

4:  Options for a Slider Element

The options available are located on the right side of the screen in the stage. You can set rules for the entire question by clicking near the question text or set rules for individual rows by clicking on the row you wish to edit. The option section will show the question or row text, label and type you have selected to edit.

4.1:  General Options

Each of the following options, when altered, affect all attributes within the slider element.

  • Label: The label assigned to the element. You may edit the default label for the slider element here.
  • Type: Displays the element type. You may change the element type to multi-select, number, select or text.
  • Show If: Allows you to create new logic conditions or select an existing logic condition for the element. For more information, click here.
  • Languages: Select what languages the element will show in if the survey has multiple languages. The default is "all languages".
  • Mandatory: When checked this option will force respondents to provide a response. The respondent will be unable to continue the survey without completing the question.
  • Randomize: Items can be randomized by rows, columns, or both. To watch a video tutorial, click here.
  • Randomize Groups: This option is available if there are row groups. When checked this option will shuffle the groups.
  • Allow Decimals: This option allows decimal entries in the numeric field.
  • Value Range: This option assigns a value range for the each open end number field in the question. For example, "1-200" will only allow the respondent to enter numbers 1-200 in each open end number field.
  • Validate Sum: This option is only available if the question has both rows and columns. Any value entered here will force the numeric sum of each row or column (based on what the question is "grouped by") to be exactly equal to this value.
  • More Options: Use the dropdown menu to select less commonly used options. Once selected, you will be able to specify the setting for that option. For more information on each option, click here.
  • Raw Options: If you prefer to manually enter the XML options, use the "Raw Options" dialog. This is useful for copying and pasting options between survey elements.

4.2:  Row Options

These options only affect specific row line attributes.

  • Label: The label assigned to the row. You may edit the default label for the row here.
  • Data Value: The value assigned to the row in the data. You may edit the default value for the row here if the option is available.
  • Show If: Allows you to create new logic conditions or select an existing logic condition for the row. For more information, click here.
  • Languages: Select what languages the row will show in if the survey has multiple languages. The default is "all languages".
  • Do Not Randomize: This option is only available if the "randomize" general option is selected. Checking this box will force the line to remain stationary. To watch a video tutorial, click here.
  • Optional: This option is only available if the "Mandatory" general option is selected. When checked it will allow for the row to become optional and non-mandatory.
  • Open End: Allows you to add an open end response box to the row by selecting "Mandatory" or "Optional" from the drop down menu. "Mandatory" means the respondent must enter feedback in the response box to continue if the row is selected, "optional" means that feedback is not required.
  • Hidden: This option will hide the row from respondents.
  • Validate Sum: This option is only available if the general option "group by" is set to rows. This option will force the respondent to enter a number equal to or less than the value entered here.
  • No Answer: This option will replace the open end number field with an exclusive check box form. It is primarily used if there is a "Don't know" or "None of these" answer choice in the question.
  • Row Pre-Text: Text/symbol entered in this field will appear before the answer field.
  • Row Post-Text: Text/symbol entered in this field will appear after the answer field.
  • More Options: Use the drop down menu to select less commonly used options. Once selected, you will be able to specify the setting for that option. For more information on each option, click here.
  • Raw Options: If you prefer to manually enter the XML options, use the "Raw Options" dialog. This is useful for copying and pasting options between survey elements.
