Overview of Question Types

1:  Overview

When it comes to collecting data, only a few question types are needed to obtain the necessary information. Each question type can be designed and structured to accommodate the specific needs of your project.

A survey question can be closed-ended or open-ended.

2:  Closed-Ended Question Types

A closed-ended question is one that limits respondents with a finite list of answer choices from which they must choose from. These are also known as dichotomous or saturated type questions.

Closed-ended questions can be programmed to accept a single selection or multiple selections.

2.1:  Single Selections

A single select question allows respondents to select one answer from a list of choices. There are currently two elements you may choose from to obtain a single selection from respondents.

Single Select Elements

Radio Question

Radio questions offer both 1 and 2-dimensional (rows and columns) options, allowing the flexibility of one answer per row or per column in 2-dimensional questions. For more information on single-select elements, click here.

2.2:  Multiple Selections

A multi-select question allows respondents to select one or more answers from a list of choices. There is currently one element to choose from that will allow multiple selections from a respondent.

Multiple Select Elements

Checkbox Question

Checkbox questions are available in 1 or 2-dimensions, and answer options can also be set to exclusive. For more information on checkbox elements, click here.

3:  Open-Ended Question Types

An open-ended question is one that does not limit the respondents to a finite list of answer choices. This type of question allows for longer responses, thus enabling more room for creativity and information. These are also known as infinite or unsaturated type questions.

Open-ended questions can be programmed to accept numeric or alpha-numeric values.

Open-Ended Elements

Number Question

This is an open-ended question restricting only numeric values. For more information on number elements, click here.

Text Question

This is an open-ended question type allowing alpha-numeric responses. For more information on text elements, click here.
