Quester ITB (Interactive Text Box) Element

Contact your Project Manager at Quester to initiate service and receive the Quester ID for your question. Quester will bill for their services.

Click here to learn how to customize the Quester Interactive Text Box using XML.

1:  Quester ITB Overview

The Quester interactive text box element is a dynamic and interactive alternative to an open-ended question. It is similar to an instant messaging session, where follow-up probes are delivered by an automated conversational moderator. Open-ended questions are shown in the interactive text box (ITB) and the respondent taking the interview is able to type their responses directly in the ITB.

  • This question must be the only question on the page.
  • The Quester ITB automatically submits the page and advances to the next question once the session is finished.

Multi-Language Surveys

The Quester ITB supports multiple languages. If a survey is conducted in 2 or more languages, each language will receive its own ITB, per open-ended question.

Supported languages include: Spanish, German, French (Canada & France), Portuguese, and simplified Mandarin Chinese.

Multiple Questions in One ITB Instance

Multiple questions in one ITB instance typically occurs when the data does not need to be separated but can be collected in aggregate. One ITB per question is recommended, which allows the data to be stored separately.

Specific Probes

All questions have a layer of probing called "targeted probing. This additional layer of intelligence allows for specific ideas to be followed up with specific probing questions.

The Quester ITB requires a unique respondent ID that links the responses to the sample source. This is defined in the "External ID" field of the style settings, and must also be set up in each sample source.

In any sample source, locate or create a "Unique" variable and copy the variable name. Then select the Quester ITB question and open the style settings.

Then select the Quester ITB question and open the style settings. Enter the unique respondent ID copied from your sample source between the curly brackets, replacing the example.

Example:  ${id}

If your project has multiple sample sources, gather the unique identifier for each and enter them in the "External ID" field between the curly brackets, separated by "or."

Example:  ${id or sic or GID}

Then save your settings.
